Zambia side

Batoka Sky collects from Livingstone-area lodges 25–30 minutes before the flight, with pickups running 08:00–16:00 daily.

United Air Charter covers the whole Livingstone and Victoria Falls area using an air-conditioned bus or open game-drive vehicle depending on conditions. For pickups outside the immediate vicinity, contact them directly.

The cross-border pickup fee

If you’re staying in Livingstone but want to fly on the Zimbabwe side, this is the detail that catches people out.

Operators will meet you at the Zimbabwe border free of charge. But door-to-door pickup from a Livingstone hotel costs US$30 per person, collected at the helipad alongside the park and fuel fees.

Several travellers report this appearing as a surprise during the weigh-in rather than at booking. It isn’t hidden exactly — it’s in the listing terms — but it’s easy to miss.

1. Get yourself to the Zimbabwe border and take the free meet
2. Pay the US$30pp for door-to-door convenience
3. Simplest: fly on the side you’re sleeping on

Three questions to ask before booking

1. Does the operator’s free transfer reach my lodge, or is there a supplement?
2. Does my lodge include transfers to the helipad? Many do, in the room rate.
3. Does my lodge have a helipad? Matetsi and The River Club both do — which turns a logistics problem into an upgrade. Matetsi’s helipad is two minutes from the lodge, and helicopter transfers can run direct from the airport in about 15 minutes.

Staying further out rarely makes the flight itself more expensive if your lodge includes transfers. It does lengthen the day.

Airport transfers

Your helicopter operator does not collect from the airport. You need this separately.

From Victoria Falls Airport (VFA)

18–22 km, 20–35 minutes to town.

• Hotel shuttles — most hotels arrange these, often included at higher-end properties
• Shared shuttles — from about US$17–20 per person
• Private transfers — roughly US$25–40 per vehicle for up to four
• Taxis — US$30–40, negotiable to around US$25. USD cash only. The airport taxi association quotes US$40 per trip for up to four.

Reputable operators: Wild Horizons and Shearwater (large, used by many hotels), Emmanuel Taxis (strong WhatsApp reputation, coordinates cross-border with a Zambian partner), My Way Taxis, Shappy Taxis and Handy Taxis.

One warning on shared shuttles: you may wait 30–60 minutes at the airport while the driver assembles other passengers. If your time matters, pay the private premium.

From Livingstone Airport (LVI)

5 km to town, 15 km to the Falls.

Ride-hailing: the honest answer

Travellers ask this constantly, so plainly:

Uber does not operate in Victoria Falls town or Livingstone.

Bolt operates in Harare, Bulawayo, Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe — not in either tourist town.

InDrive operates in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru and Mutare — not Victoria Falls.

Yango does work in Livingstone, confirmed by travellers as recently as December 2024, but is effectively cash only.

So: assume no app-based ride-hailing in Victoria Falls town, and only cash-based Yango in Livingstone. Everyone uses pre-booked transfers, hotel-called taxis (Zambia’s carry a purple stripe), or WhatsApp-based local drivers.

Save a driver’s number on arrival. Typical in-town fares run US$5–10; a shared purple taxi seat in Livingstone can be about US$1.

Crossing the border by road

Vehicles usually can’t cross. Transfer vehicles and taxis generally lack the permits, so the standard arrangement is two vehicles — one each side — with the operator coordinating and walking you through immigration. A good operator handles your bags and meets you on the far side.

Pricing: private cross-border transfers run US$50–80 per vehicle, 45–60 minutes plus border time. Per-person shuttle pricing runs roughly US$25–36.

The DIY route: taxi to the border post (~US$25), walk across, taxi on the far side (~US$5). Per taxi, not per person. Cheaper, but you’re handling bags across three vehicles and two posts.

The bridge walk: the Victoria Falls Bridge is 198 metres long, its main arch spanning 156.5 metres at 128 metres above the low-water mark. Border post to border post is more like 1.5–4 km depending on your starting point. On foot it’s 15–20 minutes at a stroll, or about an hour with immigration and photos. Safe with luggage in daylight, with a dedicated pedestrian path away from truck traffic.

Do not walk the longer road toward Livingstone town — 10 km-plus, with reports of muggings.

One quirk that catches people out: Zambia is one hour ahead of Zimbabwe. When you book a flight across the border, confirm which country’s local time you’ve been quoted.

Transfers to other destinations

Victoria Falls to Kasane and Chobe: ~70 km, 1–2 hours including the Kazungula border. Private transfers from about US$50 per vehicle; per-person rates US$50–65. The drive passes through the Zambezi National Park wildlife corridor. Most commonly bundled into a Chobe day trip, which handles the border for you.

Victoria Falls to Hwange: about 2.5–3 hours to Main Camp gate. National Parks rules prohibit driving inside Hwange after 18:00, so you need to enter the gate by around 16:00 — leave Victoria Falls at least three hours before that.

Safari lodge connections: most remote lodges bundle road, boat or light-aircraft transfers into the rate. For light-aircraft legs, expect strict soft-bag-only limits around 15–20 kg.

Reliability: what actually goes wrong

Transfers, not flights, generate most complaints. The documented pattern:

• A Bonisair pickup arriving an hour late, with the driver found asleep in his van
• A solo traveller Bonisair forgot to collect at 14:00, bumped behind later groups, with no return transport arranged, finally reaching the hotel at 18:00
• The US$30 cross-border surcharge appearing at weigh-in rather than at booking

Against that, plenty of reviews describe smooth operations — pickup, check-in, 15 minutes airborne and back at the hotel within the hour.

What to do:

1. Reconfirm your pickup time and point the day before
2. Get the operator’s WhatsApp number at booking
3. Build buffer — don’t schedule anything tight afterwards
4. If pickup is 20–30 minutes late, call immediately rather than waiting politely

Wildlife on the roads: a real safety issue

This is not brochure colour.

Victoria Falls town sits inside a national park with no fences. Elephants, buffalo and hippo move through town day and night.

In late February 2026, two residents were killed by elephants in separate incidents in a single week — along Kazungula Road and the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road in Chinotimba. The Victoria Falls Combined Residents Association chairperson Kelvin Moyo spoke publicly about it, the local MP raised it in Parliament, and authorities urged people not to walk at night.

Walking the central town in daylight is fine. After dark, take a taxi. In Livingstone, elephants likewise frequent the outskirts, and the road toward the Falls is not advisable on foot after dark.

Your door-to-door timeline

For a scheduled flight from a Victoria Falls town hotel:

Allocate 2 to 2.5 hours of your day to absorb pickup-window slack and any check-in queue.

On the Zimbabwe side the drive runs through Zambezi National Park, where buffalo and elephant sightings en route are common — a small bonus most operators don’t advertise.

Zambia-based guests flying from Zimbabwe: add the border crossing plus either the US$30pp pickup or a self-transfer to the border. And check the time zone.
