What to expect on the MJ Air helicopter flight

Victoria Falls is about 1.7 km wide, and from the rainforest walkways on the Zimbabwe side you see it one section at a time. The MJ Air flight with hotel pickup is the most-reviewed helicopter listing on this site. Its 12-minute flight started from $180 per person when we checked, with transfers from your hotel in Victoria Falls town included.

The calendar below shows which departure times still have space on your dates, and lists the 25-minute option beside the 12-minute one. The listing currently offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

From the air you see the whole curtain of the falls at once, the Batoka Gorge zigzagging away below it, and the islands on the upper Zambezi above the lip. The pilot circles the falls in both directions so each side of the cabin gets a turn at the window. On the longer flight, many describe seeing elephants, and some saw giraffes and hippos as well.

The walkways are the ground-level alternative. Since February 2026 the rainforest entrance costs $58 per person for international visitors, and the paths put you a few metres from the main falls, though in high water the spray can hide much of the view. Reviewers who did both are split. Some call the flight a good addition to the walk, and one four-star reviewer wrote that the walk was the better of the two.

We haven’t flown with MJ Air ourselves. What follows comes from the listing and from recent reviews of this flight, read in English, German, Dutch, French, Spanish and Norwegian. Four practical points to know before booking:

• The government park fee and fuel surcharge, $37 per person on the 12-minute flight or $50 on the 25-minute flight, is paid in cash at check-in on top of the online price.
• Pickup and flight times can move on the day, sometimes by an hour or more.
• Staff film you during the briefing and boarding, and the video is offered for $30 after you land.
• The 25-minute flight spends its extra time over the national park, where some reviewers saw plenty of game and others found little to see in the dry months.

All four come up in reviews from 2025 and 2026. About one review in twenty is below four stars.

The 12-minute flight, with the fee budgeted and the rest of the morning left free, makes the most sense for a first look at the falls from above. On a day with a tight connection afterward, a late pickup or a moved slot can cost you the next activity.

Should you book the 12-minute or the 25-minute flight?

The listing calls the 12-minute option a scenic flight and the 25-minute option a game flight. Both cover the falls and the gorge. The longer one adds the upper Zambezi and the Zambezi National Park, and it costs more: the calendar shows its current price, and the cash fee rises from $37 to $50 per person.

Many reviewers say the 12-minute flight was enough to see the falls properly. One described it as 12 minutes from take-off to landing, with enough loops for everyone to take photos. Opinions on the 25-minute flight are more mixed. Several people saw herds of elephants and giraffes and called it the best part, while a September 2026 review found the park too dry to show much, and a 2025 review of the longer flight said the falls were the only interesting part.

The 25-minute flight makes more sense if wildlife from the air matters to you; July and August reviews describe more game than the September one did. The 12-minute flight suits you better if the falls are the reason you’re going up, and it leaves the price difference for a game drive or a river cruise.

Five tips before you book

• Carry the check-in fee in US dollar notes for everyone in your party. That means $37 per person for the 12-minute flight or $50 for the 25-minute flight. A May 2026 reviewer said card terminals were behind the counter but only cash was accepted.
• Keep the rest of the morning free after your flight. Guests with an activity or an international flight booked soon afterward ran short of time when pickups or slots moved.
• Keep the operator’s phone number from your confirmation to hand. Late pickups were generally sorted out by calling, and some guests received a changed time by message the evening before.
• Leave large bags at your hotel. The listing does not allow luggage or large bags, and a 2024 review says backpacks and purses had to go in lockers at the helipad.
• Decide about the video before you fly. It costs $30 and is a short clip of your boarding and landing set into general footage of the falls. Some were glad to have it as a souvenir, and one said knowing they would buy it let them watch the view instead of filming.

The park fee and fuel surcharge paid at check-in

The listing puts this fee under Includes, worded as “Government Park fees and fuel surcharge ($37 for 12 minutes or $50 for 25 minutes to be paid during check-in)”. Its booking notes say it is paid in cash before the flight. In practice the fee is not part of the online price. On the 12-minute flight the total comes to $217 per person, or $434 for two.

Many of the lower-rated reviews focus on this fee. Some reviewers read the Includes line as meaning it had been paid, and an October 2026 review said the app showed taxes and fees as included. Others knew about it but did not realise it was per person, which made a noticeable difference for families and groups of four or five. A March 2026 review, by contrast, said the information was clear before booking and the fee came as no surprise.

The amount has gone up during 2026. A reviewer in February paid $29, one in May was asked for $35, and reviews from August onward give $37 for the short flight. The fee is separate from the $58 rainforest entrance, so a flight and a walk on the same day mean paying both.

Value for money is the lowest of the listing’s three category scores, at 4.3 out of 5. Guide and transportation are each scored 4.7.

What happens on the day

A driver collects you from your hotel in Victoria Falls town for the short drive to MJ Air’s helipad. At check-in you are weighed, sign a form and pay the fee, then get a safety briefing that several guests describe as unusually thorough. Recent reviews name pilots Walter and Orry, staff member Vitalis and drivers Sharon and Hopkins.

The helicopters are small, carrying three or four passengers with the pilot, each beside a window, and a booking on the listing takes up to four people. Unless your party fills the aircraft you may fly with other passengers, and in a few reviews groups were split across flights. Staff decide who sits where, and some guests were given the seat beside the pilot.

Some pilots talk you through what you’re seeing and others say little or nothing. Reviews are split fairly evenly on this, so expect either.

Waiting times vary. Some guests flew within minutes of arriving and were back at their hotel within an hour. Others waited up to an hour at the helipad, and in a few 2025 reviews a morning slot was pushed back by several hours. The return drive can also run late: an April 2026 review describes waiting more than 90 minutes for a pickup after the flight. Weather can delay flights too, and one guest waited two hours for conditions to improve.

Stop 1: Victoria Falls

The flight heads straight for the falls, and the pilot makes loops in opposite directions over the main curtain so both sides of the cabin get a direct view. Most reviewers say this worked well wherever they sat. A September 2025 review from a rear seat on the right said the left side was given more time.

In the high-water months, roughly February to May, spray can hide parts of the falls even from the air. The best time to fly guide covers what each month shows. One review mentions that the windows open slightly, which helps cut glare in photos.

Stop 2: Batoka Gorge

After the falls the helicopter follows the Zambezi downriver into the Batoka Gorge, between steep cliffs. An August 2026 review said the pilot did not fly over the gorge, so it is reasonable to ask at the briefing whether the gorge is on your route.

Stop 3: The upper Zambezi and Zambezi National Park

On the way back the route crosses the river above the falls, passing a long island upstream, and the 25-minute game flight continues over the Zambezi National Park. The listing mentions elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, giraffes and kudus. Elephants are the animal people report seeing most, and one pilot on a 12-minute flight made a detour over a herd. In the late dry season the park can look brown and bare from above.

Other Victoria Falls helicopter operators and flights

MJ Air is one of several helicopter operators at Victoria Falls. On the Zimbabwe side, Chikopokopo, Shearwater, Zambezi Helicopter Company and Bonisair fly similar 12- to 25-minute routes, and the same government fee and fuel surcharge is collected at check-in. On the Zambian side, Batoka Sky and United Air Charter fly from Livingstone, where the aviation fee is much smaller. Reviews of these operators raise many of the same points: seats allocated by weight, a video package sold after landing, and a debate over whether the longer flight is worth the extra.

Consider the Livingstone helicopter flight from Zambia if you’re staying in Livingstone and want less to pay at the helipad. Run by Livingstone’s Adventure, it started from $205 per person for 15 minutes and was rated 4.8 out of 5 from more than 60 reviews when we checked. The $6 aviation fee is included, and the listing gives a fuel surcharge of $9 per person on the 15-minute flight, with 22- and 30-minute options. Its few lower-rated reviews mention a flight time changed without notice. The listing is not suitable for passengers over 100 kg.

The Aerial View flight from Victoria Falls town includes park fees in its $200 price, but it was rated 4.3 out of 5 from 24 reviews when we checked, so we don’t recommend it over the MJ Air flight. Other practical things to know

• A few reviews say the flight was shorter than booked: a September 2026 review gives nine minutes, and a 2024 review says a 25-minute booking lasted 15. If timing matters to you, note your take-off and landing times and raise any gap at the desk before you leave.
• A 2024 review reports that a rear door, not closed properly by ground staff, opened in flight and the pilot landed to close it. It is the only report of its kind on this listing, and many guests say they felt safe throughout. The safety guide covers the wider record.

• Flights run all year. Storms and low cloud can delay or move a slot, so booking early in your stay gives you a second day if that happens.

Is the MJ Air Victoria Falls helicopter flight worth it?

Yes, if you budget for the cash fee and give the flight a morning with nothing fixed after it. For $217 per person all in on the 12-minute flight, you see the full width of the falls and the gorge below them, which no walkway viewpoint shows, with transfers from your hotel included.

It may be harder to justify if you’re mainly after wildlife, since a game drive in the Zambezi National Park spends far longer with the animals. Travellers staying in Livingstone may prefer the Zambian-side flight, where less is paid on arrival.
