Combo Deals: Helicopter Flight Plus Safari, Cruise or Rafting

Bundling activities at Victoria Falls feels like it should save money. Sometimes it does. Often it just saves you phone calls.

Here’s what the pricing actually shows: Zambia-side combos deliver a real discount of around 15%. Zimbabwe-side packages mostly don’t — they’re priced close to, occasionally above, the sum of their parts. And on every combo, the government fees and park levies are excluded and paid separately in cash.

There is one exception that’s genuinely excellent value, and most people booking a helicopter never hear about it.

Because the honest finding on this page is that most Zimbabwe bundles cost more than their components, the figure worth pricing first is the flight on its own. The Helicopter Tour with Hotel Pickup is the cheapest and by far the most-reviewed flight we list — $180, 4.75 across 594 verified reviews — and it is the baseline every combo below has to beat:

The one combo worth going out of your way for

Rafting with a helicopter lift-out of the Batoka Gorge.

Batoka Sky built helipads at rapids 10, 21 and 25 specifically to fly rafters out of the gorge instead of making them climb.

What it costs:

The maths: the helicopter adds about US$135 to a rafting day. A standalone scenic flight costs US$205. You’re getting airborne Falls time for two-thirds the price — and skipping the climb.

It’s not just a shuttle. The operator describes a 15-minute flight through the Batoka Gorge and over the Victoria Falls before landing at Maramba aerodrome. Shorter and less optimised than a dedicated 22- or 30-minute scenic flight, but a genuine flight over the Falls, not a ferry hop.

What it replaces. Rafters consistently describe the gorge exit as the hardest part of the day — a steep 20–45 minute ascent of over 750 vertical feet on a rocky path, up rock steps and Mopani-wood ladders, in heat, after a full day on the water. One common comparison: climbing the stairs of a 70-storey building.

Treat it as close to essential if you have knee problems, limited fitness, or you’re rafting in October when it’s punishingly hot.

Availability: it follows the rafting calendar — low water roughly August to December, with rafting usually suspended around the April–May flood peak. Zambia side only; Zimbabwe rafters walk out.

The lift-out is sold by the rafting operators rather than as a GetYourGuide listing, so it is not bookable through the flights on this site. If you are rafting anyway, ask for it by name when you book the raft.

What combos actually exist

Zimbabwe — Shearwater packages

Flexible bundles also exist — “any 3 Shearwater products” at US$478, “cruise plus any 2 activities” at US$370. These flat-rate bundles are poor value unless every activity you pick is itself expensive.

Zambia — Livingstone’s Adventure

Rates valid to 30 November 2026, plus US$6 aviation fee on flights.

Third-party bundles

Visit Victoria Falls sells helicopter + Chobe at US$402, discounted to US$361 — across separate days. To Do Africa, Viator, GetYourGuide and Expedia all resell the same underlying operators.

Worth knowing: almost every “combo” from a third party is a reseller bundle of the same four operators — Zambezi Helicopter Company and Wild Horizons in Zimbabwe, Batoka Sky and United Air Charter in Zambia. Which one actually flies you often isn’t disclosed until after booking.

What you can actually book through this site

The 13-hour, US$612 day is the most expensive listing on this site and has not been reviewed once. Most of what makes a Victoria Falls trip worth the airfare is sold as a separate activity rather than a bundle: sunset cruises on the Zambezi River, white-water rafting through the Batoka Gorge, the walkways of Victoria Falls National Park, game drives in Zambezi National Park, Devil’s Pool on Livingstone Island, and full-day crossings to Chobe National Park in Botswana. Do combos actually save money?

Zambia: yes, modestly

Classic Activity Combo: US$235 Booked separately: US$205 (helicopter) + US$75 (cruise) = US$280

Saving: about US$45, or 16%. Genuine.

Zimbabwe: mostly no

Shearwater’s packages price close to — and in some configurations above — the sum of current standalone rates. What you’re buying is linked transfers and a single booking, not a discount.

The combo we list makes the point with our own numbers. The Guided Tour & Helicopter Flight is $300. The same two things bought separately: the Helicopter Tour with Hotel Pickup at $180, its $37 cash fee at check-in, and $58 rainforest entry — $275 all in. The combo is $25 more if its headline price already covers both fees, and $120 more if it doesn’t. Confirm which before you book, because the answer changes the comparison but not the direction of it.

That’s not a criticism of the product. Convenience has value, especially on a short stay. But don’t book a Zimbabwe combo believing you’re saving money without checking the component prices first.

The fees nobody bundles

This is the number most people miss. Park fees and levies are charged per activity and are never included in package prices:

On a Zimbabwe three-activity combo, that’s US$105 or more per person on top of the headline price, in cash. Card payment at check-in typically adds around 3%.

Which combinations actually work in a day

Helicopters fly roughly 08:00–17:00, with the calmest air and best light early. Cruises are late afternoon. Rafting and Chobe are full-day commitments.

The sequencing rule: morning flight, evening cruise. Give Chobe and full-day rafting their own day.

By trip length:

• Two nights: flight, cruise, and one big-ticket item (Falls tour, Devil’s Pool or Chobe)
• Three nights: flight, cruise, Falls tour, plus either Chobe or a rafting day

The combo nobody should buy for wildlife

Helicopter plus game viewing pairs badly, and the reviews are consistent about why.

The 25-minute flight’s wildlife extension puts you 1,500 feet above animals in a moving aircraft. A ground game drive puts you 20 metres away, stationary.

Reviewers say it plainly: “one takes safaris to see the wildlife… don’t accept the upsell.”

What bundling costs you

Weather contingency. The helicopter is the weather-sensitive component. If it’s scrubbed, operators reschedule or refund that element — but a rigid same-day package is harder to unwind than two separate bookings.

The better packagers let you split components across days. To Do Africa and Livingstone’s Adventure both do. Rigid same-day bundles don’t, which removes your buffer.

Whose cancellation policy applies? Generally the underlying operator’s, passed through by the package seller. Shearwater’s terms: full refund or reschedule if cancelled 24+ hours ahead; within 24 hours a 50% refund plus a 5% reschedule fee; no-shows forfeit.

When to buy a combo, and when not to

Buy a combo if:

• The discount clears 15% versus current standalone rates (realistically, that means the Zambian bundles)
• It removes a genuine logistical pain — cross-border transfers, or the gorge climb
• You’re on a two-night stay and want the efficient core: flight, cruise, Falls tour
• You’re rafting anyway — take the lift-out

Book separately if:

• The saving is under about US$30 per person
• It locks unrelated activities to a single day or weather window
• You’re staying three-plus nights and value flexibility
• You want a ground game drive rather than an aerial wildlife loop

The best month for a multi-activity trip

September into October.

That’s when low-water rafting runs the full rapid sequence, Devil’s Pool is open, Chobe game viewing peaks, and flights are clear of heavy spray. It’s the only window where all four line up.

Avoid February to May if rafting or the aerial view matters: rafting is reduced or suspended, Devil’s Pool and Livingstone Island close from around late March to mid-June, and spray can veil the Falls from the air.

June to October gives the best game viewing and clearest flights, though Devil’s Pool only opens from mid-August.

October is excellent for activities but very hot — which strengthens the case for the gorge lift-out over the climb.
