Photographing Victoria Falls From the Air: A Practical Guide

Camera settings, lens choice and window technique for shooting Victoria Falls from a helicopter — plus when the spray makes good photos impossible.

You get two or three good passes. You’re shooting handheld through a curved plastic bubble, from a vibrating aircraft, with no chance to change lenses and no control over which seat you’re in.

That sounds discouraging. It isn’t — people come home with excellent images from 13-minute flights. But it does mean the decisions that matter are made before you board, and most of them are simpler than photography forums suggest.

Here’s what actually works.

Why shutter speed is the whole game

A helicopter transmits constant vibration through the airframe while moving forward and rotating at the same time. A shutter speed you’d happily handhold on the ground is nowhere near enough.

Professional aerial shooters converge on 1/1000s as the safe default. Aerial photographer Mike Wardynski sets a floor of 1/640s on a 16–35mm ultra-wide, 1/800s on a mid-range zoom, and 1/1250–1/1600s minimum on telephoto, noting that long lenses are hardest in the air because every vibration gets magnified as you zoom.

A useful rule of thumb: shutter speed roughly 6–8× your focal length. So 1/1600s at 200mm.

Don’t worry about aperture. Everything you’re shooting is effectively at infinity, so depth of field is a non-issue. You never need to stop down for sharpness. Opening up to f/4 to buy shutter speed is completely fine.

Don’t worry about ISO either. A slightly grainy shot beats a slightly blurry one every time. On a bright day over the Falls you’ll typically sit at ISO 200–800 anyway.


The stabilisation question

This is a genuine technical debate, not settled dogma.

Image stabilisation is designed to correct hand tremor against a stable earth. From a vibrating platform it can either help by damping vibration, or fight you by misreading the aircraft’s motion as shake.

The manufacturer-informed answer:

  • Nikon VR: use Active mode, or Sport on newer lenses. Nikon explicitly designed Active for shooting from a moving vehicle — it doesn’t try to cancel the platform’s translation. Normal mode can be fooled.
  • Canon IS: leave it on. Use Mode 2 if you’re panning to track ground features.
  • Software stabilisation: several videographers report it makes things worse in a helicopter. Turn it off.

The practical verdict: at 1/1000s and above, IS contributes little. Leave optical IS on in Active mode, but rely on shutter speed, not stabilisation. If you can review images in flight, test with it off.


Gear aside, the flight is 15 minutes of a trip that is usually several days long, and the rest of it photographs well too. The window is your real opponent

Victoria Falls helicopters use curved acrylic bubble windows. The upside is genuine — every seat gets a panoramic view, and Shearwater doesn’t sell middle seats on its Bell 206, so nobody is stuck looking at a shoulder.

The downside is that acrylic isn’t optical glass. You get distortion, chromatic aberration, glare, scratches and reflections.

What actually helps

Wear dark, matte clothing. Black or very dark colours. This is the cheapest, highest-impact fix available and almost nobody does it. Light clothing reflects off the inside of the bubble straight into your frame. Avoid pale bags on your lap too — and be aware other passengers’ bright clothing reflects as well.

Get the lens close to the glass — but never touching it. Close proximity minimises reflections. Touching transmits vibration directly into your images and risks scratching the window.

Do not brace against the airframe. This is the single most common mistake. The airframe is the source of the vibration — coupling your camera to it is exactly backwards. Float the camera in your hands.

It’s also a safety rule. Loose items near the rotor are dangerous: on the left side especially, a detached lens hood can be drawn into the tail rotor. Secure your strap, remove the hood, and periodically check your lens is locked — it’s easy to bump the release in a cramped cabin.

You can’t clean the outside. In high water the exterior gets wet with spray and there is nothing you can do about it mid-flight. Another argument for shooting your early passes hard, and for choosing lower-water season if clarity matters.


Lens choice

Bring one zoom: 16–50mm full-frame equivalent. Philip Greenspun’s photographer’s guide shot the Falls from a Shearwater JetRanger at exactly this range, and it remains right.

The Falls are 1,708 metres wide and you’re orbiting at around 1,500 feet. A 16–35mm or 24–70mm on full-frame, or 16–55mm on APS-C, covers the full curtain, the bridge and the gorges.

Wide beats telephoto here. It captures the scale, it’s far more forgiving of vibration, and it’s more usable more of the time. Go too wide — below about 16mm full-frame — and you’ll pull rotor tips, skids and window frame into shot.

A 70–200mm is useful for isolating Devil’s Pool, the Boiling Pot or a rainbow segment, but it’s much harder to keep sharp. If you have two bodies, bring both. You cannot change lenses in flight — not safely, not without missing passes, and not without inviting dust and spray onto your sensor.

Filters

Remove your UV or protective filter. It adds another air-glass surface, which means ghosting and reflections — exactly what you’re already fighting.

Polariser: probably leave it off. A CPL can cut reflections and intensify rainbows, and Greenspun recommends one specifically for that. But through curved acrylic it can introduce rainbow-coloured banding, it costs you 1–2 stops you need for shutter speed, and its effect shifts constantly as the aircraft turns.

Worth carrying for a doors-off charter. Through a bubble window on a 13-minute flight, usually not worth the trade.


What to shoot

The full curtain. The 1.7 km sheet head-on, shot wide. The signature image.

The zigzag gorges. The Batoka Gorge and the older fault-line gorges downstream form a Z-pattern that is only legible from the air. This is the most uniquely aerial composition available, and it works best in low water.

Which side of the aircraft?

Less important than you’d think. All the Victoria Falls operators fly both left-hand and right-hand circuits — a figure of eight — specifically so both sides get equal views.

It still has a minor effect: your best falls shots come when the Falls are on your side. Be ready to shoot hard during your passes and rest during the other side’s turn.

Be shooting from the first orbit

The best passes are the direct falls orbits early in the flight. The later legs — up the Zambezi, over the national park for wildlife — are secondary.

Don’t spend your first orbit adjusting settings. That’s the orbit you’ll wish you had back.


Rainbow physics, briefly

A rainbow forms at a fixed 42° from the antisolar point — the point directly opposite the sun.

Three consequences:

  1. Keep the sun behind you and look toward the spray.
  2. Lower sun means a higher, larger bow. Early morning and late afternoon produce the most prominent rainbows; a high midday sun gives you a low, small one.
  3. From the air you can sometimes see a fuller arc — occasionally a complete circle — because the antisolar point can sit below your horizon. This is a genuinely special aerial opportunity and worth watching for.

Rainbows are semi-predictable: whenever there’s sun and spray, a bow exists somewhere on that cone. Whether it lands in your frame depends on the pilot’s orbit. One traveller reported many rainbows on a 4:30pm last flight, which fits the low-sun rule exactly.


Season decides what’s possible

This matters more than your camera.

High water (February–May, peaking April). Maximum drama. Spray typically rises over 400 metres, sometimes nearly twice that, visible from up to 50 km away. But during flood season the foot and face of the waterfall genuinely cannot be seen, and your window gets wet.

The spray column itself is spectacular from the air, and the helicopter gives you the best available view when the ground is a whiteout. But clean structural shots of the Falls face are often impossible.

Low water (September–December). Reduced flow reveals the basalt cliffs, individual cataracts, the gorge floor and the zigzag geology. This is the better season for images where you can actually see the Falls. The trade-off is less power — and at the extreme, in November and December, parts run dry.

Shoulder (June–August). A good compromise: strong flow with clearer views.

If photography is the point of the trip

Everything above assumes a shared seat. If images are the actual reason you’re flying, the calculus changes.

Book a private charter with doors off. Zambezi Helicopter Company confirms doors can be removed for filming, subject to a full pre-flight briefing with safety equipment provided.

This is the single biggest quality upgrade available. No window means no reflections, no distortion, no wet glass — and you can direct the pilot on altitude, passes and re-runs.

Request the LongRanger and a rear door seat. Zambezi Helicopter Company markets the Bell 206L LongRanger as ideal for aerial photographic work thanks to its doors and roomier cabin. Greenspun notes the back seat offers the larger photo door.

The front seat next to the pilot sounds appealing but gives you windscreen framing, more window curvature and instrument reflections, and no easy downward angle.

Is the longer flight better for photographers? Marginally. The 22–25 minute flights add gorge, river and wildlife — more variety, a few more passes. But the extra minutes go to wildlife rather than more falls orbits. A private charter buys far more image quality per dollar than a longer shared seat.

Phone photography

Realistic expectations: a recent iPhone, Pixel or Galaxy produces genuinely shareable images, and better video than stills in this context.

For stills: use the main 1× camera, not the ultrawide (it grabs rotor and window frame) and not heavy zoom. Lock focus and exposure before the pass — tap and hold on iPhone — and drag exposure down slightly to protect the white water. Shoot ProRAW or your Android’s RAW mode if you’ll edit. Burst by holding the shutter.

For video: this is the higher-percentage play for most casual flyers. Modern computational stabilisation handles helicopter vibration very well — often better than a novice with a big camera. Shoot 4K, use Action mode or equivalent, and consider slow-motion for the spray.

Secure it. Dropping a phone in a helicopter is common: sweaty hands, a bank turn, and it’s gone. Use a wrist tether or grip case. Never hold it loosely toward the window.


Video notes

Follow the 180° shutter rule: shutter speed roughly double your frame rate. 1/50s at 24fps, 1/120s at 60fps. In bright African daylight this requires an ND filter — ND8 to ND32 — or you’ll be forced to a fast shutter that looks juddery.

60fps at 1/120s is a good choice: smooth playback, with the option to slow to 40–50% in post for the spray.

Rotor flicker and jello. Rolling shutter renders moving rotor blades as bent or fragmented, and vibration produces a wobble. Keep the rotor out of frame where you can, don’t brace against the airframe, and fix residual wobble with rolling-shutter tools in post. There’s no full cure short of a global shutter.

Gimbals are impractical on a shared flight — no room to swing one, the bubble blocks movement, and a handheld gimbal can fight the aircraft’s motion. In-body stabilisation plus post-processing is more realistic.

Action cameras work well. GoPro-class stabilisation handles helicopter vibration, and mounting close to the glass reduces reflections. It must be tethered — operators forbid loose items and exterior suction mounts. Set 4K/60, add an ND, lock white balance and ISO.

Permits, drones and selling your images

Personal photography needs no permit on either side — including for your own social media.

Commercial production does. In Zimbabwe, industry sources indicate a ZimParks filming permit around US$500 per day plus roughly US$100 per day for a mandatory ranger, with media accreditation around US$200 per crew member. In Zambia, park filming permits run about US$60 per crew member per day plus around US$50 accreditation. These come from film-fixer companies rather than published government tariffs — treat as indicative and confirm directly.

Selling images afterwards. General park practice is that images taken lawfully as an ordinary visitor — no crew, models, props or special access — can be sold as editorial stock or prints without a special permit. The permit attaches to shooting commercially on site, not retroactively to a personal image later licensed. Advertising use, or anything involving models or closed access, is different. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Does a big camera attract scrutiny? No. Operators tell you to bring one. The only real constraints are weight limits and securing loose items.

Drones are effectively banned. Zimbabwe requires a CAAZ permit realistically unavailable to visitors, drones are confiscated at customs, and the Falls are restricted airspace as a World Heritage site with heavy scenic-flight traffic. The helicopter is your only aerial platform.


Should you buy the operator’s photo package?

Usually not, if you’re shooting yourself.

Packages run roughly US$25 for photos, US$45 for video, or US$50 for both — sometimes bundled around US$35 with an HD video, a handful of edited images and a social reel.

The problem is what’s in them. A photographer shoots you before and after the flight, and the video is largely a pre-produced template with generic aerial footage plus a short clip of your own take-off and landing. Reviews are consistently lukewarm: one Tripadvisor reviewer described it as “fixed footage with a small piece of your take-off and landing added.”

Decide before you fly, because the pitch comes when you land on an adrenaline high. It has real value only if you want a hands-free memento and aren’t shooting yourself.
