Can you even book a flight for two?

Often, no. Several operators require minimum passenger numbers:

• Batoka Sky’s JetRanger and Squirrel scenic flights need a minimum of three
• United Air Charter’s EC130 needs a minimum of four for scheduled flights
• Shearwater’s shared flights generally need a minimum of two

So a couple either joins a scheduled flight and waits for it to fill, or pays for the empty seats. Allow several days’ notice for private charter, more in peak season from June to September.

A gourmet picnic prepared by The Royal Livingstone Hotel is served on the beach, with a rustic bar. Then the helicopter lifts you back out of the gorge as the finale.

The detail: roughly 4½ hours, running 10:30 to 15:00, at around US$850 per person plus a US$6 aviation fee — so approximately US$1,700 for two. Return road transfers from Livingstone accommodation and the Zambian border are included. Video footage is extra. Maximum passenger weight 100 kg.

High water, roughly February to May: the spray plume is so heavy that ground viewpoints are largely whiteout. From the air you see the full curtain.
