How much of a 13-minute flight is actually over the Falls?

This is the question that should worry you, and the answer is reassuring at most operators.

Chikopokopo flies from a helipad inside the national park and states the hop to the Falls takes about one minute, with the rest of the time spent orbiting.

Batoka Sky at Maramba Aerodrome has aircraft over the Zambezi within thirty seconds of take-off.

Zambezi Helicopter Company’s new Chinotimba hub sits roughly 5 km from the Falls — about 1.5 to 2 minutes at Bell 206 cruise speed. Note that the “5 km” figure is legacy marketing carried over from the old Elephant Hills base and hasn’t been independently re-measured for Chinotimba, so treat it as approximate.

Bonisair flies from Chamabondo, further out, approaching from the downstream gorges to bypass the town.

United Air Charter at Baobab Ridge sits 1.75 nautical miles from the Falls, but its route heads down the gorge first — so more of its flight is transit-as-content.

The practical upshot: at the close-in helipads, roughly 10 to 13 minutes of a 12–15 minute flight is spent over or around the Falls. That’s not a rushed glimpse.

You get both sides regardless

Every operator flies both left-hand and right-hand circuits over the Falls, even on the short flight, so passengers on both sides of the cabin get equal views. Since seats are assigned by weight and balance and can’t be chosen, this matters — and it’s why the short flight works as well as it does.

That sounds like the long flight is neutral value. It isn’t, quite. Because the extra minutes buy non-Falls content, the long flight is worse value per minute of Falls time. If the Falls are what you came for, the short flight is the cheaper way to see them.

On the fee: the step up from short to long adds roughly US$134 in fare and only US$13 in government levy. About 91% of the increase is airtime and route — you’re not being taxed into the upgrade, you’re buying it.

Zimbabwe operators don’t do this. A cross-border agreement holds that operators won’t descend into the gorge, and Zimbabwean operators have observed it — a conservationist quoted in the Zimbabwean press in July 2026 thanked Zimbabwe for adhering while noting a Zambian-side helicopter flying low along the gorge.

So: in-gorge flying is a genuine point of difference, and it’s a Zambia decision, not a duration decision.
